The Mahalo brand was conceived by Toshi Kikutani (Kikutani Music, Japan) in 1999 with the aim to develop and produce a Ukulele which was a “real” Musical Instrument at an entry level price point.
Kikutani Music with their vision and Team International with their manufacturing expertise and knowledge of the Chinese market, worked together to develop the very first high quality, inexpensive, playable Ukulele on the market.
Whilst the entire range of instruments was small (the Rainbow Series in Soprano) the sales success in Japan was huge. Following on from this success it was decided that Kikutani Music would allow Team International to sell the Mahalo brand worldwide and the rest, as they say, is history.
It’s debatable to what degree Mahalo sparked the worldwide Ukulele phenomenon. However there is no doubt that Mahalo played a part in the strong resurgence and popularity of the Ukulele due to their colourful appearance and inexpensive pricing for a "real" musical instrument.
The sheer quantities sold worldwide prior to and during the current Ukulele boom underlines Mahalo’s place as a major driving force in today’s world Ukulele market.
